SEOUL, Dec. 7 (Korea Bizwire) — U.S. electric vehicle maker Tesla Inc. has sold over 15,000 vehicles in South Korea this year, driven by strong demand of its affordable Model Y car produced in China, according to government and industry data Thursday.
According to the transportation ministry data, the number of Tesla vehicles sold in the country was tallied at 15,437 between January and November, representing a 7.4 percent increase from the same period in 2022.
It marked the second year for Tesla to surpass the 15,000 mark in terms of sales after selling 17,826 units in 2021.
For 2023, monthly sales remained below 2,000 units until Model Y, produced in Tesla’s Shanghai factory, was launched in July. Tesla car sales surged up to 4,501 in September and reached 3,562 last month.
According to the data, Model Y accounted for 99 percent of all Tesla models sold in the country in November. It was also the top-selling imported vehicle in September, having sold 4,206 units that month.
