SEOUL, Aug. 13 (Korea Bizwire) — South Korea’s top tech giant Samsung Electronics has won a patent for hologram technology that works on smartphones, the U.S. patent office said Thursday, which may mark another significant progress in the development of mobile devices.
Samsung applied for the patent, dubbed “mobile device capable of displaying hologram and hologram method,” in September last year, the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office said.
Samsung Electronics said previous hologram technologies called for a “separate light source having its own power supply,” which made them difficult to work on handsets due to size and weight.
The latest finding, however, aims to “display a holographic image without a separate light source,” allowing the technology to work on devices as small as smartphones.
“Holographic images in a plurality of colors can be displayed to correspond to a plurality of specific events. Therefore, a variety of information can be provided to users using holographic images,” Samsung added.
