SEOUL, Jan. 23 (Korea Bizwire) – “Thinner” and “lighter” have long been the mantra for laptop manufacturers. The focus is now shifting to battery power in Korea, with two of the country’s largest laptop makers – Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics – highlighting the battery capacity of their latest computers.

Samsung added last month a new model to its Notebook 9 series dubbed “Always”, which is distinguished by its fast charging capability. The company claims that it takes roughly 80 minutes to charge the device to full, while a 20-minute charge would allow up to 3 hours of use.

The computer can be charged with a 10-watt or higher capacity portable smartphone battery charger as well.

The tech giant added that a 20-minute charge would allow up to 6 hours of operation, while a full charge takes about 100 minutes.

The latest move for Samsung is the company targeting specifically its biggest domestic competitor, LG Electronics, industry watchers said.

LG introduced earlier this month a new model of the LG Gram, “All Day”, which is equipped with a 60Wh battery with up to 24 hours of operation.

The company announced in an official statement that its laptop marketing will focus on the ultra-light Gram and the All Day Gram, while at the same time reassuring customers of the laptops’ excellent battery performance and safety (supplied by LG Chem) with a subtle dig at the Galaxy Note 7 fiasco.

“While manufacturers have long been competing for thinner and lighter products, consumers remained rather unsatisfied with laptop battery performance,” said an industry official. “It seems their focus is now on battery performance.”
