SEOUL, Mar. 30 (Korea Bizwire) — South Korea’s Samsung SDI Co. will supply its electric-vehicle batteries to Volkswagen’s new 2017 e-Golf, an industry source said Wednesday.
“The new e-Golf equipped with a Samsung battery will go on sale in global markets this spring,” the source told Yonhap News Agency.
Samsung SDI and LG Chem Ltd. are the country’s two biggest car battery makers.
Samsung SDI currently supplies its batteries to BMW’s i3 pure-electric car and it expects the battery supply deal with Volkswagen to help it make greater inroads into the European car battery market.
When contacted by Yonhap, spokespersons for Volkswagen Korea and Samsung SDI didn’t confirm the battery deal between the two companies.
In May last year, the German carmaker said the new e-Golf will get a battery that will give it a range of up to 300 kilometers on a single charge.
