SEOUL, Apr. 22 (Korea Bizwire) — Samsung Group will lead a worldwide program for environmental protection in 25 countries as the company celebrates Earth Day on April 22.
Thirteen Samsung subsidiaries including Samsung Electronics Co., Samsung Display Co., Samsung SDI CO. and others will participate in a six-week program to collect old mobile phones from staff members.
First launched in 2015, the campaign has been held each year to raise awareness of environment protection and the recycling of resources.
So far, Samsung has collected more than 27,000 mobile phones, including the 7,976 phones turned in last year.
The program, which has in the past been held only in South Korea, will be expanded to Samsung offices in the United States, Russian, Spain, and other countries this year.
Samsung Electronics will also introduce various environmental programs for customers visiting Samsung service centers in 25 countries including Mexico, Turkey, Canada, and Germany to celebrate Earth Day.
In Mexico, customers will be presented with seeded flowerpots, which will be grown and planted in a national park designated by the Mexican government on the country’s Arbor Day in October.
In Turkey, children visiting Samsung service centers will receive coloring books and colored pencils made of recycled materials to inform them of the importance of the environment as ‘the legacy for the next generation.’
Customers in Canada, Germany, Spain, Taiwan, Ukraine, and others will be gifted with flower pots, eco bags, and other eco-friendly souvenirs with a guidebook on environmental protection.
“‘Planet First’ is Samsung’s slogan to prioritize environmental protection in its business management,” said a source familiar with the electronics giant.
“We are currently undertaking various activities to reshape our thinking towards minimizing waste and recycling resources.”
Samsung has been using recycled plastic parts in refrigerators, washing machines, air conditioners, televisions, mobile phone chargers, and other products.
In January 2018, the company announced its plan to replace plastic and other disposable materials used for packaging with eco-friendly alternatives.
What’s more, Samsung will offer services to collect old home appliances for customers who purchase new products, and install boxes at service centers to collect old electronic goods to recycle them and contribute to the circulation of resources.
