SEOUL, June 21 (Korea Bizwire) — The South Korean Catholic Church expressed its clear opposition to the legislation of the so-called “well-dying law” recently proposed in the National Assembly.
The Catholic Archdiocese of Seoul’s Committee for Life said Monday that what terminal patients need to reduce pain and face death with dignity aren’t acts that cut down on life, but the loving care of the community.
“The bill may become a basis of abuse, in which the patients may make decisions against their intent to relieve the financial burden from their families,” the committee said.
“The committee calls for the creation of policies and legislation that expand hospice care and palliative care for terminal patients so that they can be treated with respect until the time of their passing.”
Previously, Rep. Ahn Gyu-back of the main opposition Democratic Party proposed a new amendment bill to allow euthanasia for terminal patients, assisted by doctors, in extreme pain.
