Seoul City Gov’t Designates Gwanak-Shinsa Market as First “Green Traditional Market”

SEOUL, Korea, Dec 27 (Korea Bizwire) – The Seoul Metropolitan City Government said on December 26 that Gwanak-Shinsa Market (located at 58 74th Road, Nangok-ro, Gwanak District) earned the first “Green Traditional Market” designation. The designation is given by the city government to traditional markets that adopt solar panels for their energy needs while eliminating energy-guzzling incandescent lamps.

 The ceremony for the designation will be held in the morning of the 26th at the entrance to the market, with the merchants, environmental advocacy group Chorok Sangsang members, Philips Electronics Korea officials, Gwanak District head Lyu Jong-pil, and Seoul city government deputy mayor Kim Sang-beom in attendance.

The merchants in the market have replaced incandescent light bulbs with energy-efficient LED lightings provided by Philips. In addition, the market management installed 15-kilowatt solar panels on the roofs of the buildings inside the market. Under the leadership of the management committee, the merchants have complied with the rule to maintain temperature at 26 degrees Celsius in summer and 20 degrees in winter.

Since October this year, the city government has deployed professional energy-saving designers and actively sought to reduce the use of incandescent bulbs in 112 traditional markets in its jurisdiction. The government is holding a promotional event in which it gives away a total of 50 million won in prize money to traditional markets that succeed in saving electricity significantly for four months between December 2013 and March 2014.
