Seoul District Deploys Drones in War Against Mosquitoes

SEOUL, June 1 (Korea Bizwire) – In a novel approach to combat mosquitoes and other pests, Gangnam District in Seoul has become the first area in the South Korean capital to launch a drone squad for targeted insecticide spraying.

At a ceremony on May 31 at Neulbeot Neighborhood Park, Gangnam officials unveiled their new drone unit that will conduct twice-weekly missions through October to spray eco-friendly pesticides in hard-to-reach areas like riverbanks, parks and hiking trails.

“With climate change and an increase in visitors from abroad, the influx of foreign insects has made swift and efficient pest control crucial, even in blind spots unreachable by humans,” said Cho Sung-myung, the district mayor.

Beyond the new drone initiative, the affluent Seoul district already operates 770 insect traps, 24 mosquito traps and 14 repellent spray devices. Solar-powered traps are planned to further its environmental efforts.

Gangnam has also launched door-to-door larva extermination consulting for large apartment complexes with over 300 households this year. Smaller residential areas will receive one-stop tank cleaning and immediate spraying services, while individual homeowners are being provided with larvicide.

A dedicated call center allows residents to promptly report pest issues in the district, long known for its trendy nightlife but now taking its insect invasion seriously.

“By proactively using drones to exterminate mosquitoes in parks and rivers, we aim to reduce inconveniences for residents and ensure a safe Gangnam protected from mosquito-borne diseases,” Cho said.
