SEOUL, Feb. 2 (Korea Bizwire) – Seoul Metropolitan Government is preserving not only traditional historic buildings but also soon-to-be historical spots that marked important places in Korea’s contemporary history.
The Seoul government announced on February 1 that it has so far selected 350 spots in Seoul that should be preserved for future generations. The government has opened a special website (http://futureheritage.seoul.go.kr) which provides historic and tourist information on the future heritages.
Sungwoo Barbershop, which opened in 1927 and is the oldest barbershop in Seoul, has been in business for three generations, and has now been selected as a future cultural heritage of Seoul. It is to be preserved, as its value will be even bigger to future generations. Hakrim Cafe, which was a favorite spot for famous contemporary Korean writers, and the historic Daeo Used Bookshop in Seochon, which first opened in 1951, were also selected as future heritages.
Relics from Korea’s era of authoritarian rule are also on the future heritage list. The memorial room for Park Jong-cheol, a student who died on January 14 in 1987 from torture conducted by a governmental body, and an underground bunker built in Yeouido for military regime officials are two examples.
The Seoul government will start promoting the 350 spots and complete the marking of the spots with future heritage signs by this August.
