SEOUL, Feb. 6 (Korea Bizwire) –  SK Hynix announced on February 6 that it has established a pioneering long-term plan in the global semiconductor industry to actively incorporate recycled and renewable materials into its product manufacturing process.

The company has set ambitious targets to increase the use of recycled and renewable materials in its products to 25% by 2025 and to more than 30% by 2030.

In its commitment to achieving net-zero emissions, SK Hynix recognizes the global shift towards a circular economy, where resource recycling is becoming a critical challenge for nations and businesses alike.

The company has proactively set phased targets to increase the proportion of recycled materials used, aligning with this global trend.

The roadmap includes specific goals to raise the percentage of recycled materials used in the products manufactured by SK Hynix to at least 25% by 2025 and over 30% by 2030, based on weight.

To meet these targets, SK Hynix will begin by substituting recycled materials for certain essential metals used in semiconductor production, such as copper, tin, and gold.

The company explains that metals, which make up a significant portion of the weight of memory semiconductor products and are difficult to replace with other materials, offer the most substantial impact on resource circulation when recycled.

Furthermore, the company plans to replace the plastic packaging materials used to protect finished semiconductor products with recycled plastics.

SK Hynix is also enhancing the certification process and quality assessment for recycled materials it purchases directly. It will review quality certificates for component materials supplied by partners before deciding on their use, as part of its efforts to achieve the roadmap’s goals.

The company is working on getting support and participation from its suppliers in the verification and certification of the recycled material usage rates by reputable external organizations such as the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).

Song Junho, vice president and head of advanced quality and analysis at SK Hynix, emphasized the company’s dedication to ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) principles and its active participation in building a global circular economy.

“By implementing our roadmap, we aim to achieve tangible results by joining forces with all stakeholders in the semiconductor supply chain, including customers and partners,” Song pledged.
