SEOUL, Sept. 6 (Korea Bizwire) — White-collar employees and engineers at SK hynix Inc. on Thursday announced the launch of a new labor union, calling for the management to adopt a transparent evaluation system for workers.
The SK hynix division of the Korean Chemical & Textile & Food Workers’ Union said it has officially opened an exclusive labor union that encompasses a broader base compared to the past.
South Korea’s No. 2 chipmaker previously only had a union for production workers, but it did not allow participation by white-collar staff.
“We wish to work in a company that operates a fair evaluation system with open communication (between workers and the management),” the union said, claiming the organization will represent members so as to remove irregularities in the workplace.
The union demanded SK hynix review its current personnel policies, including the punishment of under-performing workers.
With workers of South Korean game developer Nexon Co. also opening a labor union earlier this month, industry watchers said the latest move by SK hynix is likely to push other tech firms to follow suit.
