SEOUL, March 4 (Korea Bizwire)The Ministry of Environment announced Wednesday the introduction of a new bill that will require Internet of Things (IoT) measuring devices to be installed at sites of major greenhouse gas emissions.

Once the bill takes effect, businesses categorized as sites of smaller amounts of greenhouse gas emissions (Types 4 and 5) will be required to install IoT measuring devices for tracking.

Businesses that cause more than 10 tons of air pollution each year (Types 1 to 3) have been tracked by a tele-monitoring system (TSM) for real-time control of emissions.

Those that cause less than 10 tons of air pollution each year, however, had to rely on periodic on-site checks.

The new bill will go through a phase-by-phase process to be implemented across various types of businesses.

Newly established Type 4 businesses will now be required to install IoT measuring devices starting from January 1, 2023. Incoming Type 5 businesses will need to have the devices installed starting from January 1, 2024.

Incumbent Type 4 and 5 businesses will be required to install the device starting from January 1, 2025.

Since 2019, the government has been subsidizing as much as 90 percent of the cost to install IoT measuring devices at business sites.

As of last year, IoT devices have been set up at some 3,500 locations, with each device costing around 3-4 million won (US$2,600-$3,500).
