SEOUL, Jan. 18 (Korea Bizwire)The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries said Tuesday it had completed a pilot project to distribute shipping container Internet of Things (IoT) equipment that had been carried out for two years as part of an initiative to enhance export competitiveness.

Under this project, IoT equipment was installed on the outside of a container, enabling shipping companies to check the state of containers on a regular basis.

The ministry has distributed 4,160 units of IoT equipment to Korean-flagged shipping companies since 2021.

The digitalization of containers can contribute to creating new added value for shipping companies since it enables them to secure a variety of data on cargo location and its state.

In addition, the ministry has also been developing technology to put smart containers mounted with sensors and a remote-control function into practical use starting in 2021.

“State-of-the-art devices such as chips and batteries that are the nation’s main export items are highly sensitive to temperature and vibration. The development of smart containers is essential to strengthening export competitiveness,” a ministry official said.
