South Korean Cement Maker Pioneers Carbon-Capturing Mortar

SEOUL, Aug. 9 (Korea Bizwire) – In a groundbreaking development for the construction industry’s fight against climate change, Hanil Cement has successfully tested a new type of floor mortar that actively captures carbon dioxide.

This innovative product, unveiled on August 8, marks the first time in South Korea that carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) technology has been applied to mortar.

The company conducted a trial pour of its new product, called Remitar FS150, at a test facility in its Gongju factory on August 7. This specialized mortar incorporates 0.4 kg of carbon dioxide per cubic meter, effectively trapping the greenhouse gas within the building material.

The infusion of carbon dioxide into the mortar yields multiple benefits. During the curing process, it increases the cement’s density, allowing for a 3% reduction in cement usage while maintaining the same strength.

This dual action of carbon capture and reduced cement consumption could have significant environmental implications.

Hanil Cement estimates that if this CO₂-infused mortar were to replace all of its annual floor mortar sales, it could lead to a reduction of approximately 50,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions.

To put this into perspective, this is equivalent to the annual carbon dioxide emissions of about 16,000 passenger cars, each driven 35 km per day.

The company has not only developed the product but also secured the technology for its automated application. Hanil Cement has patented a device for precise CO₂ injection into mortar and integrated it into mobile silos.

These silos can automatically mix the mortar with water in the correct proportions and pump it through hoses, even to high floors in apartment buildings.

Plans are already in motion to implement this technology in real-world settings. Hanil Cement has announced a collaboration with Lotte Construction to pour this innovative mortar in an actual apartment complex this September.

Oh Hae-geun, a senior executive at Hanil Cement’s Technology Research Institute, expressed pride in the achievement.

“We’re honored to be the first in South Korea to apply CCUS technology to our floor Remitar products, contributing to carbon neutrality,” he said. “We will continue to focus on differentiating the quality of Remitar.”
