SEOUL, Dec. 22 (Korea Bizwire) – The “You Are the Judge” sentencing experience program offered by the Supreme Court’s Sentencing Commission is set to release new content on Friday.
This program engages participants in watching videos depicting real-life crimes, presenting arguments from defendants, defense attorneys, and prosecutors. Participants then play the role of a judge, selecting an appropriate sentence based on the information provided.
The Sentencing Commission recently announced the release of additional content focusing on digital sex offenses and defamation offenses. The new material includes a case involving a digital sex offense, where an individual was apprehended for selling sexually explicit images of teenagers during an undercover police operation.
Another case involves defamation, where a person posted an article online following a dispute with an acquaintance.
During the program, participants witness reenactments of these cases, listen to arguments from the defendant, defense attorney, and prosecutor, and ultimately decide on a suitable sentence.
They can then compare their judgment with the actual sentence imposed. The primary goal is to offer participants a firsthand experience of the trial process, fostering a deeper understanding of sentencing. Launched in January 2018, the program has seen remarkable growth, with a total of 665,627 trials conducted as of October of this year.
The Sentencing Commission expressed its aims for the initiative, stating, “Through the program, we aim to improve the public’s comprehension of sentencing and sentencing standards, while gathering valuable insights into public legal perspectives. The accumulated data will play a crucial role in shaping and refining sentencing standards in the future.”
