SEOUL, Jan. 20 (Korea Bizwire)Tunisia was named the country that sent the largest number of international spam phone calls to South Korea last year, data showed Thursday.

Mobile virtual network operator SK Telink Co. unveiled the list of the top ten spam-sending countries on the basis of its analysis of international spam calls that it disconnected last year.

International spam refers to the illegal behavior of inducing abnormal international communication and access from foreign countries to South Korea.

Tunisia ranked first, accounting for 7 percent of the total international spam. Following Tunisia were France, Georgia and Iceland at 6 percent each.

The number of international spam calls disconnected last year stood at 6.73 million, up 2 percent year on year, with the number of damage cases declining by more than 57 percent compared to a year ago.

SK Telink suggested that amid the escalation of geographical instability resulting from the Russia-Ukraine war, Europe’s neighboring countries emerged as a new origin of international spam.
