SEJONG, Sept. 24 (Korea Bizwire) – It seems like small sized fruits that can be eaten whole will be taking over the market instead of large ones.
As the number of one person households has increased, the Rural Development Administration announced that it would develop good quality smaller fruits, and start to supply the new produce regularly.
The apple that has the highest distribution rate is the Fuji, which usually weighs around 310 grams and has a diameter of approximately nine centimeters, and the most common pear is the Singo, which comes in at 750 grams with a 12 centimeter diameter.
However, the new apples that the Rural Development Administration developed are smaller in size. The ‘Arisu’ (285g), ‘Picnic’ (223g), ‘Hwangok’ (229g), ‘Summer dream’ (220g), ‘Ruby S’ (90g) and ‘Deco Bell’ (10g) are all smaller than Fuji apples. Other than the ‘Deco Bell’, which is for ornamental purposes only, the other new apples are slightly bigger than a ping pong ball.
The new kinds of apples will be harvested from late August to September, and their sweetness is similar to that of the Fuji. Since they can be eaten without being peeled, they are suitable for picnics, in-flight meals and meals at schools or military camps.
In addition, the Rural Development Administration developed pears that are smaller but higher in sweetness. Golden Pears (450g) are already one of the four main species of pears that are grown in Korea, and are exported to America, Taiwan, and Canada.
The newly developed varieties meet demand for smaller sized fruits as the number of one-person households and smaller families is increasing. Also, they are convenient because they can be eaten without having to be peeled.
Officials from the Rural Development Administration state that domestic produce that is smaller in size and more affordable should be developed in order to survive in the global market.
