SEOUL, March 29 (Korea Bizwire) – The vice chairman of South Korean retail giant Shinsegae Group on Thursday revealed an autonomous shopping cart under development as the company moves to secure competitiveness of its offline distribution channels.
Dubbed eli, it would be the world’s first autonomous cart, Chung Yong-jin said in a post on his Instagram account that included a clip showcasing the cart’s key features.
According to the video, the cart automatically follows shoppers and helps them browse items and recommends discounted products.
The disclosure was made one day after the business tycoon said the company is developing a “cart with cutting-edge technology to improve customers’ shopping experience.”
“Though we haven’t decided when to introduce the cart, we are considering its adoption within the next three years,” Chung told reporters during the firm’s job expo in Seoul on Wednesday.
“Since the size of the investment needed is huge, we will first go through a test operation and proceed by complementing any shortcomings,” he said.
