CHUNCHEON, Feb. 12 (Korea Bizwire) — Residents of Yeongwol County in Gangwon Province are strongly opposing a plan to set up a solar power plant in the area.
A total of 41 residents from county’s Yongseok-ri Village filed a lawsuit against the mayor of Yeongwol last Friday to put a stop to the construction plan.
“The mayor of Yeongwol unilaterally approved the construction of a solar power plant in the area without any discussion with residents, despite the dangers it may pose against the livelihood and environmental interests of residents,” said the group filing the suit.
County’s current official stance is that legal problems do not exist in the construction plan, as it was approved long before it became a legal obligation to discuss with residents when approving such construction projects.
The construction plan involves building two 999kW solar power plants in two locations in Yongseok-ri.
The plan has been at the center of controversy ever since Yeongwol County approved the project back in November 2016.
