JEJU, Nov. 15 (Korea Bizwire) — A recent report has confirmed a significant increase in the number of single-person households on Jeju Island.
According to a report released Thursday by the Jeju Branch of the Honam Regional Statistical Office, the number of single-person households on Jeju amounted to 73,250 last year, up 180.1 percent, or 47,098 from the 26,152 recorded in 2000.
Single-person households accounted for 16.6 percent of households in 2000, increasing to 29.4 percent last year and becoming the most common household type.
Last year, there were 37,607 male single-person households on Jeju, compared with 35,643 female single-person households.
The number of single-person households with inhabitants aged 65 or older also rose to 16,022 last year, up 53.3 percent, or 5,570 from 10,452 in 2000, the report showed.
It is expected that by the year 2045, the number of single-person household will continue to rise up to 123,916 by 2045 on Jeju.
“The increase in the number of single-person households is a trend in the process of diverging households,” said a government official.
“At any point, single-person households are expected to continue to increase, even if the growth rate stops at a certain peak.”
In particular, Jeju’s population growth in the form of single or two-person households, and the high divorce rate among people in their 40s, are also likely to have been affected, according to the analysis.
