SEOUL, April 22 (Korea Bizwire) — With a growing number of South Koreans working out at home and making an effort to stay healthy, foods that are low in sugar and high in protein are becoming new standards for the health functional food industry.
If a company can provide tasty but functional products to hundreds of thousands of consumers, it can dominate the market.
As a result, the market has seen a number of recent product releases for high-protein foods.
Selex, a nutrition brand for adults owned by Maeil Dairies Co., a major Korean dairy company, has achieved 30 billion won (US$24.2 million) in sales just one year after its launch as its effectiveness in preventing muscle loss as well as helping build muscles has been confirmed.
Not to be outdone, one glass of protein shake from inexpensive coffee chain Baek’s Coffee offers the same quantity of protein as eating 5.6 eggs. Even better, the sugar content is much smaller than other beverages.
Meanwhile, another dairy maker Binggrae Co.’s high-protein yogurt “Yoplait protein,” which contains more than 8 percent protein for the first time in Korea, has 10 grams of protein per cup – 2.6 times more than regular products.
