CHUNCHEON, Sept. 3 (Korea Bizwire) — The Gangwon Fire Headquarters announced on Tuesday that it had developed the nation’s first smart cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) manual in a moving picture format as part of efforts to contribute to enhancing the survival rate of cardiac arrest patients as well as to raise public awareness about the four minutes of golden time.
The four minutes of golden time refers to the importance of starting CPR within four minutes after someone’s heart stops.
The smart CPR manual contains information on how to give first aid to a person suffering from cardiac arrest or respiratory obstruction.
The manual was developed based on considerations that the outbreak of the coronavirus makes it difficult to perform CPR education and the survival rate of cardiac arrest patients remains unchanged despite the increase in CPR performance rate by ordinary citizens.
The Gangwon Fire Headquarters has been offering CPR education to about 270,000 people every year, but numbers declined to about 30,000 during the January to August period of this year due to the outbreak of the coronavirus.
The existing CPR manual, developed by the 119 Situation Office, offers less vivid and intuitive CPR information since it features static images with low quality resolution.
The Gangwon Fire Headquarters’ smart CPR manual uses moving pictures to make it easier for people to understand how to perform CPR.
The smart CPR manual consists of six parts. The first three parts are about CPR techniques by patients (adults, children and infants) and the last three parts about the Heimlich maneuver, a procedure used to help a person who is choking.
