HONGCHEON, Oct. 14 (Korea Bizwire) — Hongcheon County in Gangwon Province held the 69th commemoration of Maj. Jules Jean-Louis (1916-1951), a Korean War hero from France, on Tuesday.
Jean-Louis joined the Korean War in October 1950 to treat wounded soldiers and civilians.
He’s famously known for rescuing two Korean soldiers who stepped on a landmine in Hongcheon on May, 8 1951, before being killed by one of the mines on his return journey.
He was 34 years old.
In 1986, the county built a statue of Major Jules to celebrate the centennial of the Korea-France diplomatic ties.
Every year on May 7, the regional representatives and the military attaché to the French Ambassador gather in remembrance of the French war hero. This year, the ceremony was held later due to the coronavirus.
