SEOUL, Sept. 10 (Korea Bizwire) — Pizza is being ruled out from what was once heated competition with fried chicken over late-night snacks and delivery food.
Cheong-o DPK Co., which runs South Korea’s top pizza franchise Domino’s Pizza, reported total sales of 232.8 billion won (US$199.3 million) last year, up 114.2 percent since 2010 (108.7 billion won).
In contrast, major fried chicken franchise Kyochon F&B reported total sales of 447.6 billion won last year, up a whopping 210.5 percent since 2010 (144.1 billion won).
Papa John’s, the country’s third-largest pizza franchise, reported total sales of 52.5 billion won last year, an increase of 102.9 percent since 2010 (25.9 billion won).
Over the same period, South Korea’s second-largest fried chicken franchise BHC Co. reported sales growth from 60.2 billion won to 400.3 billion won, an increase of 565 percent.
Genesis BBQ Co., the third-largest fried chicken franchise, saw sales grow from 159.9 billion won to 325.6 billion won, up 103.6 percent.
“Pizzas are simply too large for single-person households, which are growing in number,” an industry official said.
