SEOUL, Aug. 9 (Korea Bizwire) — Casinos on the southern resort land of Jeju are making an offensive to fill in the gap created after Macau’s shrinking presence in the industry following China’s blockade of the city to fend off COVID-19.
Lotte Tour Development Co., the operator of the Jeju Dream Tower Resort, announced Monday that it will bring its VIP casino customers from Singapore to visit its Dream Tower Casino, just in time for Singapore’s biggest holiday season in August.
Dream Tower Casino signed a contract with nine agencies registered in Singapore and Malaysia earlier on.
Lotte Tour Development expects that the inflow of Southeast Asian tourists, interested in accommodation, dining, shopping, as well as going to casinos, will contribute to the resort’s overall rising sales.
It is moving aggressively to solidify its place in the casino industry in alignment with Macau’s shrinking presence in the market.
Macau has seen its casino industry sales shrink by a whopping 95 percent following China’s rigorous zero-COVID-19 policy, setting an all-time low record ever since statistics were made available in 2009.
“It is too early for us to say that Jeju may become the ‘second Macau’, but we do believe in the need to build a new market that goes beyond China,” said an official at Jeju Shinhwa World, one of South Korea’s largest integrated resorts.
“We are also preparing to tap into the Southeast Asian market.”
