IMSIL, May 9 (Korea Bizwire) — The “Cheese History Museum” has opened in Imsil County, the birthplace of South Korean cheese located in the southwest of the country, the local government said on Monday.
Covering a total area of 1,683 square meters, the museum houses a hall, an exhibition hall, a cheese-making and fermentation workshop, a playground, and a shop.
Building the museum required a budget of 9.1 billion won (US$6.86 million).
“The Cheese History Museum will go a long way in enhancing Imsil’s status as the center of Korean cheese and raising awareness of the ‘Imsil N Cheese’ brand,” said an official.
The showroom traces the development of Imsil’s cheese industry while providing information on dairy manufacturers in the region.
Visitors will be able to see the entire cheese-making and fermentation process and purchase cheeses made on-site, as well as Imsil N Cheese products.
There is also a space in memory of late Ji Jeong-hwan, a Belgian-born priest whose birth name is Didier t`Serstevens.
After being appointed as a priest at the church of Imsil in 1964, he worked on the multiplication of gorals and the manufacture of milk and goral cheeses before building the first cheese factory.
He died in April 2019 at the age of 88 and was posthumously decorated with the Moran Medal of the Order of Civil Merit for his contribution to the Korean cheese industry last year.
