SEOUL, Jan. 3 (Korea Bizwire) — The head of Hyundai Motor Group, South Korea’s top carmaker, said Wednesday it will step up innovations in vehicle electrification and robotics this year, as the auto conglomerate seeks to promote sales of electric vehicles (EVs).
Euisun Chung, Hyundai Motor Group executive chairman, made the remarks as he delivered a New Year’s message at a plant in Gwangmyeong, south of Seoul. The plant is the group’s first dedicated EV plant in South Korea.
“I am excited about the series of innovations in electrification that will start here at AutoLand Gwangmyeong, the Group’s first EV-dedicated plant, and expand to Ulsan, the United States and beyond,” Chung said in a statement.
Hyundai Motor Group plans to complete its redevelopment of the Gwangmyeong plant in the second quarter of this year to include the dedicated EV plant. The plant will produce Kia’s EV3 model for domestic and international sales.
“Consistent change is the key to innovation,” Chung said. “The act of stepping out of your comfort zone may seem unsettling at first, but it is proof that you are actually moving in the right direction.”
Chung also outlined the need to strengthen measures toward carbon neutrality for the sustainable progress of humanity.
“We can help nurture a global hydrogen ecosystem and strengthen carbon-neutral activities through our small modular reactors and clean energy solutions,” Chung said, adding, “We can take the lead in social responsibility as a global enterprise, by revitalizing the circular economy that recycles resources, such as EV batteries.”
