SEOUL, May 16 (Korea Bizwire) — Lee Dong-gyeong, the most productive player in South Korean football this season, has been voted the best player in the top competition for the second straight month.
The Korea Professional Football League (K League) announced Thursday that Lee was voted the Player of the Month for April in the K League 1.
Lee, who was also named the league’s best player for March, began the season with Ulsan HD FC. The 26-year-old has since left the two-time defending champions to begin his mandatory military service. Following his four-week training, Lee will join the military club Gimcheon Sangmu FC in June.
In five matches in April, Lee recorded three goals and three assists. On April 28, his final match for Ulsan before his military service, Lee had a goal and an assist for a 3-1 victory over Jeju United.
Lee leads all K League 1 players this year with 12 goal involvements — seven goals and five assists.
He is just the second player ever to win the Player of the Month award in consecutive months, joining Stefan Mugosa of Incheon United from February-March and April 2022.
The winner was chosen on votes by the K League’s technical study group (accounting for 60 percent), fans voting on the K League website (25 percent) and players of “EA Sports FC Online” (15 percent) by Electronic Arts (EA) Sports, the league’s official video game partner.
Lee was tied for the lead in the K League voting with Lee Sang-heon of Gangwon FC with 20.52 percent of support. Lee finished first in the two other categories, earning 11.17 percent of the votes from K League fans and 8.36 percent of support from EA Sports FC Online players.
