SEOUL, July 23 (Korea Bizwire) –Amid ongoing public requests to bring back Fu Bao, the giant panda recently returned to China, Seoul city officials have clarified that they are not currently pursuing any procedures for the panda’s return or a new panda lease.

On July 23, the Seoul Metropolitan Government addressed the issue on “Imagine Seoul,” a citizen proposal platform.

While acknowledging discussions about alleviating public disappointment over Fu Bao’s departure, city officials stated, “A panda lease is not being pursued at this time.”

The clarification comes in response to remarks made by Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon during a meeting with Tian Xiangli, chairman of the Sichuan Provincial Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, on July 15.

Oh had expressed hope for “something to fill the emptiness in people’s hearts,” broadly indicating an interest in potentially leasing another panda, not specifically Fu Bao.

Following these comments, online platforms saw debates emerge, with some citizens advocating for Fu Bao’s return, while others argued against the practice of animal leasing altogether.

However, the city emphasized that panda leasing falls under the authority of the Chinese central government and requires a rigorous approval process.

A Seoul city official characterized the mayor’s comments as “a kind of pleasantry,” explaining that Oh was primarily conveying Fu Bao’s immense popularity in Korea during the meeting.
