SEOUL, July 30 (Korea Bizwire) – The ruling Democratic Party (DP) launched a special committee Wednesday to assist ongoing special counsel probes into former President Yoon Suk Yeol’s botched martial law bid, corruption allegations involving his wife and the death of a Marine.
Three separate special counsel teams are currently investigating Yoon’s failed attempt to impose martial law in December, the alleged interference of an initial probe into the 2023 death of a Marine and corruption allegations surrounding former first lady Kim Keon Hee, including stock price manipulation and her acceptance of a luxury bag.
“We will do our utmost to restore constitutional order and judicial justice that was undermined by the Yoon Suk Yeol administration and ensure that the special counsel probe goes smoothly,” said Rep. Jeon Hyun-heui, who will head the 46-member committee.
Jeon added that the committee will actively support the investigations through legislative means, including revisions to the special counsel laws, or efforts in extending the period of the probes.
Citing repeated court rejections of arrest warrants for key figures in the probes, Jeon said the committee may even consider pushing for a “special inspection” if the court continues to “block” the investigations.
The Seoul Central District Court recently rejected multiple arrest warrants, including one for former Marine Corps Commandant Kim Kye-hwan in connection with the death of the young Marine.
Yoon, who is at the center of all three probes, has refused the special counsels’ requests for questioning, citing health issues.
