SEOUL, Aug. 8 (Korea Bizwire)Prime Minister Kim Min-seok said Friday the government should consider raising the national terror alert level as the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit draws near, in order to ensure the event is hosted successfully.

According to his office, Kim made the remarks while presiding over a counter-terrorism commission meeting, as South Korea prepares for the APEC summit scheduled to take place in the southeastern city of Gyeongju from Oct. 31 to Nov. 1.

“It is natural to assume that the target of terrorists may not be limited to the event venue itself. Security measures should be implemented not only in the event area but across the entire country,” Kim said.

“We need to thoroughly manage immigration and ensure the highest level of safety at major public facilities and key national infrastructure. We also should strive to minimize the risk of any unrest and accidents,” he added.

Kim called for the establishment of a strong response system “across all stages,” including the collection of international terror intelligence and on-site protection for VIP guests, stressing that flawless safety measures will be key to ensuring a successful “K-APEC.”
