SEOUL, Sept. 8 (Korea Bizwire) — President Lee Jae Myung said Monday he will develop the artificial intelligence (AI) industry into the nation’s next-generation driver of growth through investment.
Lee announced the goal of making South Korea one of the world’s top three AI powerhouses at the launch of the National AI Strategy Committee, chaired by himself and comprising one standing vice chair, 34 private-sector members and 13 ministers.
Lee said South Korea “now stands at a historical turning point that will determine whether we remain a lagging follower at risk of being left behind, or become a pioneer enjoying infinite opportunities.”
“The vision of becoming one of the world’s top three AI powers is a core survival strategy that will decide our nation’s future,” Lee said.
He warned that falling behind would mean technological dependence, industrial decline and deepening inequality, and urged bold action to push forward with AI transformation.
At the inaugural meeting of the presidential committee, Lee outlined four strategies to foster the AI industry.
“We must realize inclusive, human-centered AI that everyone can easily access and use,” he said, pledging strategic government investment to support the private sector and strengthen global competitiveness.
He stressed the need to overhaul systems in administration, healthcare and education to make society “AI-friendly,” and proposed “negative regulations,” a framework under which all activities are allowed unless explicitly prohibited by law.
Lee also emphasized the importance of fostering AI-related industries, building infrastructure and nurturing talent in ways that ensure balanced regional growth.
