SEOUL, Oct. 30 (Korea Bizwire) —  Seoul is turning to artificial intelligence and advanced spatial data to make its streets safer, using a city-developed 3D mapping platform to identify and eliminate potential crime blind spots.

City officials said Wednesday that the new system, known as the S-Map Crime Vulnerability Prediction Model, will be fully deployed this month. The model integrates Seoul’s vast spatial data—covering housing, transportation and the environment—into a single digital map, allowing authorities to pinpoint high-risk areas with precision.

The model divides the entire city into 100-meter grid units, analyzing crime risk factors for each zone using AI and big data. It incorporates variables such as foot traffic, streetlight brightness, building use, and the density of CCTV cameras to calculate risk scores. Machine learning algorithms trained on past crime records help identify where patrols should be strengthened and where additional safety infrastructure—such as emergency alarms or security lighting—should be installed.

The predictions are visualized in real time through S-Map, Seoul’s 3D geospatial platform, which will guide local patrol teams, optimize the placement of security equipment, and assist in replacing outdated safety systems.

Officials expect the system to improve residents’ sense of safety by allowing for customized neighborhood-level policing policies.

“The city aims to connect urban data and cutting-edge technology across public safety, transportation, and welfare,” said Kang Ok-hyun, head of Seoul’s Digital City Bureau. “Our goal is to build a digital city that citizens can truly feel in their daily lives.”
