SEOUL, Nov. 5 (Korea Bizwire) — South Korea on Wednesday launched a new alliance of major corporations aimed at building a domestic quantum technology ecosystem, underscoring the government’s push to position the country at the forefront of a field seen as the next frontier in computing and national security.

The alliance brings together 34 leading companies, including Samsung Electronics, Hyundai Motor, Hanwha Ocean and Samsung Biologics, as well as major financial institutions such as KB Kookmin Bank and Shinhan Bank, according to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Resources.

The group will focus on developing industrial applications for quantum technology, improving standards and regulatory frameworks, and supporting the sector’s global expansion, the ministry said.

At the launch ceremony, officials also unveiled plans to localize core materials and components for quantum hardware, including superconducting quantum processing unit packaging and cryogenic cooling systems. The initiative will extend to software development projects aimed at solving complex problems across industries ranging from finance to biotechnology.

“We will spare no effort to support domestic companies in the quantum components and materials sector,” Vice Industry Minister Moon Shin-hak said. “Our goal is to ensure they do not miss the golden window for industrialization and secure a position in the global value chain.”

The announcement marks another step in Seoul’s broader strategy to strengthen its technological self-reliance amid intensifying global competition in emerging industries such as semiconductors, artificial intelligence and quantum computing.
