SEOUL, Nov. 16 (Korea Bizwire) — LG Group said Sunday it reduced roughly 5.39 million tons of carbon emissions in 2024, marking a 26 percent drop from the previous year and putting the conglomerate ahead of its climate goals. The results were detailed in the latest LG Net Zero Special Reporting 2024, published on Nov. 14.
The report covers seven major affiliates responsible for most of the group’s emissions: LG Electronics, LG Display, LG Innotek, LG Chem, LG Energy Solution, LG Household & Health Care and LG Uplus.
Of the total reduction, about 1.25 million tons came from direct mitigation efforts—an increase of 20 percent from a year earlier—through measures such as switching to lower-carbon fuels and deploying hydrogen-based technologies at companies including LG Chem. Another 4.14 million tons were cut through expanded renewable energy use.
The group’s renewable energy transition rate reached 30 percent in 2024, allowing LG to achieve its 2025 target a year early.
LG became the first major Korean conglomerate to release a group-wide net-zero roadmap in early 2023 and has committed to publishing annual updates. The company aims to reduce emissions 34 percent from 2018 levels by 2030, 52 percent by 2040 and achieve net-zero by 2050.
To reach those goals, LG is implementing a granular roadmap broken down by affiliate, business unit and production site, while investing in clean-tech initiatives—one of the group’s “ABC” growth pillars, alongside AI and biotech.
The conglomerate highlighted several climate-focused business efforts, including energy-efficient HVAC systems at LG Electronics, battery recycling for cathode material production at LG Chem, and a low-carbon urban data center under construction by LG Uplus in Pyeongchon.
“We are pushing forward with ambitious emissions-reduction goals aligned with global recommendations, Korea’s national climate commitments and customer expectations,” the company said.
