SEOUL, March 7 (Korea Bizwire) – The Seoul Metropolitan Government is making efforts to compile memories the city holds, which, when put together, form the contemporary history of the city.
The Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture announced that it is recruiting 30 ‘memory collectors’ from March 7 to March 18, for the fourth term of the Memory in Seoul Project. The memory collectors will record testimony and stories about the city from citizens.
Before hitting the streets in June, the memory collectors will receive training for interview skills, and will be educated on verbal recording and the modern history of Seoul for a period of 10 weeks.
This year, the number of mobile studios collecting memories from various locations will be increased so that more memories can be shared.
The collected memories will be reborn as culture and art content such as performances, exhibits, webtoons and books.
Since the Memory in Seoul Project started in 2013, 70 memory collectors have interviewed 14,000 citizens about their memories of Seoul.
The pansori (Korean musical storytelling) ‘Sound of June’, which was produced by Ahn Sook-sun, the art director and master singer of pansori at the National Center for Korean Traditional Performing Arts, was based on memories of the collapse of the Sampoong department store. The piece was in the spotlight when it was performed last year, the 20th anniversary of the accident.
Officials from the Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture commented that they hope to receive applications from those who are interested in digging up the unknown history of the city and shedding new light on historical events.
