SEOUL, Jun. 23 (Korea Bizwire) — Wine is becoming an increasingly popular beverage of choice, particularly among South Korean women in their 20s, a new report says.
According to data released by Shinsegae Department Store on Thursday, sales of wine among customers in their 20s from January to May this year more than doubled compared to the same time last year.
When broken down by gender, sales of wine among female customers saw a 115 percent increase, while they jumped 70 percent among male customers, the South Korean department store learned after analyzing data gathered from its 40,000 members.
While the sales performance of wine products at Shinsegae Department stores stayed nearly the same among those in their 30s and 40s, the figure for those in their 50s and 60s dropped 21 percent compared to the same time last year.
Overall wine sales until May this year increased 24 percent on year, however, thanks to the growing popularity among both men and women in their 20s.
Amid growing numbers of single households, the new data from Shinsegae reflects the recent South Korean trend of drinking alone, as low-alcohol beverages and smaller-sized white wines and sparkling wines are proving popular, accounting for nearly 40 percent of all wine sales at the department store.
