SEOUL, Jan. 15 (Korea Bizwire) – The air quality of the Olympic host of PyeongChang and its neighboring areas will be under special watches until after the Winter Olympics are over, a national environment research organ said Monday.
The Winter Olympics and Paralympics will be held from Feb. 9-25 and March 9-18, respectively, in PyeongChang and the neighboring city of Gangneung.
The National Institute of Environmental Research said the special watches are effective from Monday through March 30, during which time fine dust is likely to arrive from China.
Vehicles measuring fine dust pollution levels will be stationed on alpine ski slopes in Jeongseon County and at a thermoelectric power plant in Gangneung, the institute said, adding that measured values will be made public in real time.
High-definition weather forecasts for the games’ venues will also be provided, and satellite images will used to crack down on possible sources of air pollution emissions, according to the institute.
An analysis of the effects of suspending operations at the outdated Yeongdong Thermoelectric Power Station No. 2 in Gangneung will also be carried out during the Olympic period, the institute added. The plant has been stopped until June for the games.
