Anxiety and Depression Among Children on the Rise Following Pandemic

SEOUL, May 4 (Korea Bizwire) Children are feeling less satisfied and are struggling more with anxiety and depression following the coronavirus outbreak.

ChildFund Korea conducted a two-month study of 1,825 children and teenagers in October of last year, which showed that levels of life satisfaction among children and teens fell from 7.27 points out of 10 in the pre-pandemic era in 2017 to 6.93 points in 2020.

Happiness levels were more or less the same, going from 7.22 points in 2017 to 7.24 points in 2020.

Levels of anxiety and depression, on the other hand, rose from 1.17 points out of 3 in 2018 to 1.24 points in 2020. Worry among children, too, rose from 1.31 to 1.56 points.

±³½Ç µé¾î°¡±â Àü ü¿Â È®ÀκÎÅÍ

The share of respondents who had thought about committing suicide rose from 1.4 percent in 2018 to 4.4 percent in 2020.

Sorted by household income, a children’s happiness tended to be far lower among impoverished households than those who were better off.
