NAMWON, May 12 (Korea Bizwire) — An evening of comfort and easy listening was brought to those with developmental disabilities on May 10 at the Jirisan Small Theater in Namwon, North Jeolla Province. Titled “Drop TokTok Music TokTok,” the concert infused various sensory experiences into the performance to immerse the audience in the magic of music.
In addition to classical arrangements, the concert presented a unique blend of traditional Korean music and contemporary magic, granting a new cultural and artistic experience to all present.
Organized by Yeiwoo, a nonprofit organization, the concert was created with the aim of providing a “barrier-free” classical concert for people with developmental disabilities, which took place for the first time in Jeonbuk in 2020.
Barrier-free events create a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere, enabling everyone, including people with disabilities, to watch with ease and comfort.
“We devised this project to address the shortfall of barrier-free performances which typically cater to people with physical disabilities or are held in large cities,” said Choi Ye-ji, head of Yeiwoo, elaborating on the purpose of the performance.
“The number of people with developmental disabilities has increased to 260,000, with their concentration in small and medium-sized cities and rural areas. Therefore, we concluded that a fresh approach to the genre of barrier-free performance was essential.”
The next set of performances will take place in June in Gochang County, followed by Sunchang County in July, Jinan County in August, Jeongeup in September, and Iksan in October. All six events are free, thanks to the generous sponsorship of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Arts Center for the Disabled.
