SEJONG, March 16 (Korea Bizwire) – Data shows that the number of bicycles in Korea now stands at 10.22 million, and 34.7 percent of households possess at least one bicycle. As more people are looking into eco-friendly means of transportation, government authorities are making an effort to provide a better cycling environment.
The Korea Transport Institute reported the results of its investigation into bicycle ownership, which was part of a government project to support transportation policies regarding bicycles.
The institute investigated bicycle ownership and the average number of bicycles possessed by individual households.
Ownership rates were the highest in Sejong City (43.4 percent), followed by Daegu (39.3 percent), Gyeonggi Province (38.3 percent), Gangwon and Chungbuk provinces (38 percent each), Seoul (37.2 percent) and Daejeon (36.1 percent).
The average number of bicycles per household was the highest in Gyeonggi Province (1.7 bicycles), followed by Gangwon Province, Seoul and Incheon (1.65 each).
Reflecting the trend towards an eco-friendly lifestyle, government officials are making efforts to provide citizens with a bicycle-friendly environment.
Officials from Gyeonggi Province announced that they will conduct safety inspections on 3,556 bicycle routes in the region to prevent accidents in the spring season.
The city of Gwangju is operating a bicycle terminal near Gwangjucheon River and Yongsan River. Located in a vacant area under a bridge, the terminal offers free repair services, safety education, and information about bicycle routes.
Seoul is providing safety education programs. Authorities will visit 100 elementary schools, junior high schools and high schools to provide safety instruction related to bicycle riding.
In addition, many local governments including those in Incheon and Uijeongbu are providing their residents with bicycle insurance. Many others are making efforts to create a bicycle-friendly environment, such as officials in Jeongup, who are planning to reinvent their city as a ‘bicycle town’.
In the meantime, Seoul is increasing the number of bicycle rental stations from 150 to 450 locations to promote bicycles as an eco-friendly means of transportation. The increased number of stations is expected to offer improved convenience for citizens and visitors.
