Jun. 30 (Korea Bizwire)South Korea’s presidential Blue House is positioning itself as an exemplary “tree hugger” aimed at spurring more significant behavioral changes among the public.

Cheong Wa Dae, the executive office of the South Korean head of state, announced yesterday that it would be cutting back on the use of single-use items such as plastic cups in its latest attempt to help foster a “greener” work environment.

“The staff here are being urged to try to steer away from using single-use plastic or paper cups, and ideally, to embrace the use of reusable items such as mugs or tumblers,” noted a press release issued yesterday by the Blue House.

In line with this environmentally-friendly approach, the office will encourage the use of eco-bags instead of plastic bags that are frequently used but do not naturally degrade, making them one of the biggest hazards to the environment. In addition, souvenirs offered to Blue House visitors will be changed to eco-friendly mugs; previously, plastic cups were commonly issued items to guests.

This proposition has been made by President Moon Jae-in, who suggested via Twitter on June 5 – World Environment Day – that environmental protection could begin with small actions.

Moreover, within the year, green cars will replace all government-owned vehicles that are waiting for replacement due to old use, with 84 percent of the total vehicles in the presidential secretariat office expected to be “green” cars.

The Blue House also said that it would install a charging station for EVs in the parking lot, with the aim of raising awareness of green car use.
