BUSAN, Jan. 10 (Korea Bizwire) — The city of Busan announced comprehensive plans on Wednesday to develop a pedestrian-friendly city environment.
Since 2009, Busan has implemented series of pedestrian policies which faced constant difficulties involving driver-centered traffic systems as well as a lack of funding.
This time, Busan invited experts, institutions, and task forces since last September to develop five strategies with 35 objectives.
The plan will involve an investment of 1.08 trillion won (US$966 million) by 2022 to implement the policy.
Major objectives include installing additional crosswalks throughout the city, paving pedestrian paths along the city’s coastline, developing stronger measures to protect students and seniors from traffic accidents, and various landscaping projects for pedestrians.
The plan will also open up Gwangan Bridge to pedestrians on a periodic basis, and includes a variety of walking festivals to foster a healthy pedestrian culture.
“A pedestrian-friendly city also means it is a safe city with an outstanding public transportation system,” said a source from Busan’s city government.
“Fostering pedestrian culture will help reduce fine dust and minimize the urban heat island effect.”
