SEOUL, May 16 (Korea Bizwire) – Goon-Sa-Bu-Il-Chae: ‘The king, teacher, and father should be treated equal’. It’s an old saying in Korea, emphasizing the monumental roles that teachers play in Korean society.
The Korean definition of teacher extends far beyond a simple reference to someone who teaches. The relationship is much more personal. The term Susung (teacher) refers to one who not only teaches, but mentors and leads his/her students in the right direction.
May 15 is Teacher’s Day in Korea. It is also the birthday of Sejong the Great, one of the most celebrated kings of the Joseon Dynasty.
As is the case on Parent’s Day, students often present carnation flowers to their teachers.
