SEOUL, June 25 (Korea Bizwire)A recent study showed that compared to foreign brides from other countries, those from China and the Philippines suffer more stress from adapting to Korean culture.

Sharavdorj Erdene, a PhD candidate in the Department of Child Development and Family Studies at Pusan National University, conducted a survey of 416 foreign brides from four countries and measured the level of stress they suffer from adapting to Korean culture.

In the category of communication, foreign brides from the Philippines recorded a score of 17.00, higher than those from Vietnam (15.60), China (14.80) and Mongolia (10.70). Higher scores are associated with higher levels of stress.

In the category of cultural shock, foreign brides from China (28.90) and the Philippines (28.10) recorded higher scores than those from Vietnam (24.70) and Mongolia (22.30).

The results were the same even in the categories of the sense of homesickness and hostility.

“In the case of Chinese foreign brides, China’s socialist characteristics and the things that create tension in Korea-China relations could increase their sense of social prejudice and hostility,” Erdene said.

“The results of the survey for Filipino foreign brides were similar to the results of preceding studies, which found that they could feel a huge cultural shock due to social prejudice about their physical appearance and the difference in living environments such as climate, food and residential culture.”
