WONJU, Jan. 26 (Korea Bizwire) — In a move to protect and showcase one of its national treasures, the city of Wonju has announced plans to develop the Bangye-ri Ginkgo Tree Square around Natural Monument No. 167, a ginkgo tree believed to be over 900 years old.
The city aims to safeguard this historic tree from fire hazards by installing advanced autonomous fire suppression equipment. This system is designed to target and spray fire-extinguishing agents directly at the source of a fire, effectively minimizing damage in its initial stages.
Additionally, the city plans to install lightning rods to prevent damage from lightning strikes and equip the area with streetlight-style black boxes for added protection of the ginkgo tree.
The development of the ginkgo tree square also includes the creation of pedestrian pathways from the parking area to the tree, allowing citizens and tourists to enjoy the stunning views of the tree throughout all seasons. The construction of the parking lot and access roads is scheduled for completion in the first half of this year.
The Bangye-ri Ginkgo Tree, standing 32 meters tall with a maximum circumference of 16.27 meters, is a majestic sight with its branches spreading widely in all directions. It provides a striking appearance throughout the year.
Designated as a natural monument in 1964, the tree was then estimated to be around 800 years old. However, some believe it is now over 900 years old.
Wonju Mayor Won Gang-su expressed his commitment to preserving this landmark. “We will put great effort into protecting our iconic ginkgo tree,” he said. “By integrating the Ginkgo Tree Square with other attractions, we plan to create a unique and enjoyable city that everyone will want to visit.”
