SEOUL, Dec. 31 (Korea Bizwire) — The pandemic has had a significant impact on how people access multimedia as they read webtoons or listen to music at home and watch animations on streaming platforms.
In a survey conducted by the Korea Creative Content Agency, 83.1 percent of respondents said they had watched animated video content via streaming platforms this year, which was 9.2 percentage points higher than the pre-pandemic era in 2019.
Those who said they read comic books at home jumped by 18 percentage points from 2019. In contrast, those who reported visiting comic book rental stores dropped by 15.2 percentage points.
At 81.3 percent, a vast majority of respondents said they read webtoons at home, which was 2.2 percentage points higher than in 2019. Another 78.6 percent said they use smartphones to access webtoons, which was 8 percentage points higher than in 2019.
This year’s webtoon consumption was 66.9 percent, up by 3.5 percentage points since last year. This year’s comic book consumption was 33.8 percent, up by 5 percentage points.
The survey on comic books was conducted with the participation of 3,200 people nationwide between the ages of 10 and 69. The survey on animations and characters was conducted on the same number of people between the ages of 3 and 69.
