DAEGU, Mar. 22 (Korea Bizwire) — The city of Daegu will push for projects to protect pets, including strengthening the management of stray animals, with the aim of creating a “pet friendly city.”
According to Daegu’s city government, officials have decided to implement various measures to protect pets in order to establish a pet culture that matches the growing public interest in pets such as dogs and cats raised at home.
The city will spend 870 million won (US$770,000) on the project this year, as part of efforts to capture stray animals such as abandoned dogs and stray cats, and find new owners after testing them for disease.
The measure takes into account the reality that there are more than 4,000 stray animals reported every year in Daegu alone, but many die of natural causes or are euthanized in shelters.
Of all the stray animals last year, 1,800 were adopted by new owners, while 679 were returned to their original owners’ arms.

About 1,900 stray cats will be neutered this year and 10 cat feeding centers will be established and operated.
In addition, 32,000 sets of garbage bags will be distributed at pet show venues and other places to distribute the joint living guidelines for pets.
