SEOUL, Aug. 31 (Korea Bizwire) — Doosan Enerbility Co., a heavy industry affiliate of Doosan Group, said Tuesday it had joined hands with a group of local subcontractors to strengthen its competitiveness in the production of casks, containers used for the transportation and storage of spent nuclear fuel.
A day ago, the company signed a memorandum of understanding with eight nuclear equipment suppliers to promote localization in cask manufacturing technology.
Under terms of the MOU, Doosan Enerbility will transfer the know-how and capabilities in cask design and production that it has accumulated for years, while the suppliers will strengthen their respective production competitiveness to promote cask commercialization in and outside Korea.
Doosan Enerbility exported casks to the U.S. last year for the first time among Korean companies.
In collaboration with Nuclear Assurance Corp., a U.S. provider of nuclear fuel cycle technology and consulting solutions, the company also co-developed a metal cask model, MSO-37, that is considered safer than concrete casks.
The new model passed the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC)’s examination for design verification, with a license expected to be acquired next month.
