SEOUL, May 8 (Korea Bizwire) – Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) continues winning orders for commercial vessels by receiving orders of two ultra-large LPG carriers.
DSME announced on April 7 that it signed a contract to build two very large gas carriers (VLGCs) with an Asian client. The value of a vessel is approximately US$80 million and total amount of orders will reach $160 million.
The contract came about by the exercise of options of additional VLGC orders which were offered by the client. Last February, DSME signed two contracts for four VLGCs with two different Asian clients and the two parties in principle agreed to order two additional VLGCs each.
The vessels will be 226 meters long, 36.6 meters wide, and able to load liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) up to 84,000 cubic meters. They will be built in DMSE’s Okpo shipyard and are scheduled for delivery in the latter half of 2016.
The VLGC-class carriers transport some 70 percent of global LPG needs and recently placing orders for the vessels keeps increasing thanks to environmental regulations, rise of LPG demand following high oil prices and surging transportation cost. Especially, the orders for VLGCs are increasing in Asia and North America to transport LPG within their own countries.
